Cinema Quebradinha

Cinema as a cultural right.

A traveling film club with a large screen, sound, seating, popcorn, soft drinks, and conversation—a collective experience of belonging rooted in local communities.

Screenings, connection, and cultural education.

Cinema Quebradinha is Coletivo Quebradinha’s flagship initiative. Its purpose is to democratize access to cinema, audiovisual experiences, and culture—especially in underserved neighborhoods and communities where that access remains limited.

More than presenting films, the project creates collective experiences of connection, belonging, cultural learning, and reflection. Each screening is designed to transform schools, public squares, associations, institutes, libraries, sports courts, and community spaces into genuine movie theaters.

The project travels with a complete screening setup: projection equipment, a large screen, sound system, seating, a support team, popcorn, and soft drinks. This structure creates a welcoming, complete experience for children, young people, adults, and families.

Culture as a right.

Cinema Quebradinha begins with a simple principle: access to culture is a right. Its work is therefore guided by these commitments:

The project recognizes cinema’s power to entertain, move, educate, raise questions, and expand how people see the world and themselves.

Films selected in dialogue with each community.

Cinema Quebradinha’s film selection responds to the audience profile, age group, community, venue, and goals of each activity.

Priority is given to Brazilian and independent works that engage with identity, belonging, diversity, culture, rights, human relationships, the environment, childhood, youth, community, and life in underserved neighborhoods.

The program also values works featuring Black, Indigenous, and community-based characters, as well as other groups historically underrepresented on screen.

The selection avoids content that reinforces prejudice, stereotypes, violence, or harmful representations without critical context.

For children’s screenings, priority is given to age-appropriate works with accessible language, artistic quality, and educational potential.

For young people and adults, the program may include films addressing social, historical, cultural, and political themes, always considering age ratings, screening context, and opportunities for audience dialogue.

The program also highlights local productions and independent filmmakers, connecting audiences with works that rarely reach commercial circuits.

Every screening begins with its audience’s reality.

Each screening is planned around the community and the participating audience.

Before the screening, the team briefly introduces the collective, the project, and the selected work, preparing the audience and providing context for the film.

Whenever possible, the screening is followed by a facilitated conversation, debate, or activity. The goal is not to impose an interpretation, but to create a space where people can speak, listen, share experiences, and reflect together.

Facilitation is accessible, respectful, and appropriate for the audience’s age.

Depending on the format, screenings may also include workshops, artistic activities, educational programs, cultural performances, and interactive experiences.

A welcoming environment is part of culture, too.

Cinema Quebradinha believes that how audiences are welcomed is an essential part of the cultural experience.

Every activity is organized so people feel welcome and that the space belongs to them.

Setup, reception, seating, the distribution of popcorn and soft drinks, projection quality, sound, and the team’s care all contribute to the experience.

For many children, the screening is their first cinema experience. Surveys by the collective found that approximately 95% of participating children had never been to a conventional movie theater.

This finding reinforces the project’s commitment to creating memorable, respectful, high-quality experiences.

Memories created in every community.

Cinema Quebradinha is part of Coletivo Quebradinha’s more than ten-year journey, which has directly reached over 3,000 children through cultural, educational, and community initiatives.

The project’s impact is measured not only by attendance, but by the access it creates, audience participation, the conversations it inspires, and the memories formed in each community.

The project seeks to:

Cinema Quebradinha does not simply arrive to screen a film.

The project builds relationships, listens to residents, engages with local institutions, and respects the character of each community.

Activities are developed in partnership with schools, associations, institutes, libraries, collectives, artists, educators, community leaders, and public institutions.

This networked approach extends the project’s reach and helps ensure that every screening responds to local needs and realities.

Cinema belongs to the community, too.

Cinema Quebradinha believes every child has the right to see themselves represented on screen, inhabit cultural spaces, and experience stories that expand their dreams.

It also believes underserved communities are not merely consumers of culture, but places of production, creation, memory, knowledge, and transformation.

Every screening affirms that cinema belongs to the community, too.

Cinema Quebradinha continues to bring screens, sound, stories, popcorn, connection, and reflection to different communities—transforming everyday spaces into places of cultural experience, learning, and belonging.
